Abstract

The success of any educational institution highly depends on the way it rewards its teachers in order to ensure their continual support towards school effectiveness and efficiency. The main objective of the study is to examine the effect of reward system on teachers’ performance in public and private secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State. Survey research design was used for the study. Data was collected through the use of questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the respondents’ bio-data, while multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses formulated. Findings of the study revealed that monetary reward, fringe benefits, and career advancement opportunities) had significant effect on teachers’ commitment in public secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode Local Government. Monetary reward, fringe benefits, and career advancement opportunities had no significant effect on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools. Monetary reward, fringe benefits, and career advancement opportunities had significant influence on quality assurance in public schools. Monetary reward, fringe benefits, and career advancement opportunities had significant effect on teachers’ commitment in private secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode Local Government. Monetary reward, fringe benefits, and career advancement opportunities had no significant effect on students’ academic performance in private secondary schools. Monetary reward, fringe benefits, and career advancement opportunities had significant influence on quality assurance in private secondary schools. The study concluded that teachers’ commitment, students’ academic performance, and quality assurance in public and private secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State can only be realized when the right reward system in terms of provision of monetary reward, fringe benefits, and career advancement opportunities exist in such schools.
